2012 Brewvival Reflections

Provided by CBCer Steve…

Brewvival is absolutely the premier craft beer event in the lowcountry.  The lines were long to get in (again), so you want to get there early (well before the gates open at noon).  You would have thought I would have learned that lesson last year, but you’d be wrong.  Three double rows of brewers, I’d say there were probably were 50 great beers, and 200 good beers there.  Weather was great, smoked a very good Montecristo #2 that I’ve been saving for such an event with an old friend of mine.

ABV: 9.8% IBU’s: 99

I had several favorites, but the most memorable was probably an opulent and incredibly complex Imperial Stout called Mexican Coffee Cake from Westbrook, its brewed with vanilla, cinnamon, cocoa nibs, espresso, and habanero chilis.  Barrel-Aged Monck’s Revenge from Terrapin was another favorite - a bright, over-hopped belgian style IPA that had a gorgeous peaty nose almost reminiscent of Lagavulin single-malt scotch.

All told, if you weren’t there – you must not like beer…

CBC Helping Families Debrief

The CBC sponsored a family without means to have Christmas gifts this year. We

Closed for kick-ass private party.

huddled up at Oak Barrel Tavern for a private party where the only cost for admission was bringing a gift or making a contribution towards a gift card. 30 CBC’ers rolled in, several of which it was their first event!

My truck was filled with gifts, folks had brought, and we raised $200 which will go toward gift cards.  The evening was filled with good times and great craft beer.  Special thanks to Oak Barrel Tavern.  All in all; The mission was a total success.
I’d like to thank and welcome all the folks who were experiencing their first CBC event and chose to be part of something generous.  It was great to meet the new folks: Braden, Brent, Billy, Marty, Darra (sp?), Stella (raffle winner!), Jamie, Marion, Andy, Sarah, Hannah, Alan, Kelly.  We all hope to see you at future events.

An amazing turn out, and an amazing group of people. The family we sponsored is definitely going to have a nicer Christmas morning. Thanks Everybody!

As always photos for the event can be found in the Photos section of the site.

BrewCrew Helping Families (Private Event 12/6 6-9PM)

The holiday season is well upon us.  A time for enjoying spicy-noted winter ales and getting that special someone a growler gift.  It’s also a time to embody the Christmas Spirit.

Keeping with the season of good tidings, the Charleston BrewCrew is proud to announce its involvement in the Low Country’s Families Helping Families program.

Come support this event and take part in the Christmas Spirit.

The Families Helping Families program is a partnership bringing together the generosity of local families and community groups to help area families in need and the BrewCrew is pleased to be in a position to be involved.

WHAT HAS BEEN DONE?

Gerry has sponsored a family of 4 on behalf of the BrewCrew.  This family is without means to provide Christmas gifts this holiday season and the CBC is throwing a party to help.

The Oak Barrel Tavern (in Avondale West Ashley) has been rented out 6-9 PM on Tuesday December 6th to host our private member only event.  There will be amazing craft beer (happy hour prices apply the entire party), hors d’oeuvres (free to you), socializing and a raffle.  All it will cost is the bringing of a gift (see below) or a $5 donation at the door which will go toward a Wal-Mart/Target Gift Card for the family.

Simply put, for the cost of a delicious draft beer plus the tip, you could make special a local family’s Christmas.

WHERE and WHEN AGAIN?

Oak Barrel Tavern 825 Savannah Highway  (843) 789-3686

CBC Historic Pub Tour (w/Photos)

The Charleston historic pub stroll went off without a hitch last night.  The turnout was unusually low for a CBC event.  There were only 8 that attended, a far cry from even the low number of 15 that had ‘accepted’ the evite.

What appeared to be a negative, quickly was realized as a positive.  Our size was ideal for the tour guide to delve deeper into detail and at certain points of the tour give us an option of two destinations to choose from. He was knowledgeable of the background on each, but allowing us to choose made sure we were getting the best experience we could have.

We visited Bootleggers, Tommy Condons, The Griffon, Charleston Beer Exchange and The Blind Tiger.  Some of the pubs we heard history on were no longer standing, but nonetheless there story was equally impressive.

All photos are available in the Photo section of the website.

Thanks to Alan for being our tour guide and thanks to all that showed up to make the event happen.  Good times!

Takin’ a Stroll: Charleston Historic Pub Walk

Exclusive CBC Private Pub Tour  on Nov 19

Come out with CBC and enjoy an exclusive tour with Charleston local historians Alan Stello and Michael Coker.  Our tour will be a private affair through the historic streets of Charleston.  Our guides will regale us with unusual but true stories of the city’s past.  We’ll hear tales of early city drinking habits, prohibition-era criminals and other historical oddities of which locals seldom speak.

We’ll be given a ten minute oration outside each establishment of its history and unique past and twenty minutes to have pint inside.  It’s a multi-bar walk with a guided-tour twist.

Come join us.
